Basilica of Saint Mary shares its perspective after serving low-income dental services center with eviction notice

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Basilica of Saint Mary has shared on its website a statement about why they served the St. Mary Health Center with an eviction notice.

St. Mary Health Center is Wilmington’s only clinic that offers free dental services to low-income patients. Staff with the Health Center say they received an eviction notice Frida, Aug. 23. It was the latest move in months of back and forth between the Basilica and the health center.

In a statement posted on its website Tuesday, the pastor of the Basilica said it needs the space the center currently uses to expand its St. Mary Catholic School.

He says they tried to transition this in slowly and wanted to allow the clinic to remain in the building until the end of the calendar year, however this request met with “inadequate response.”

“Therefore, we have decided to accept the end of the parish relationship with the clinic altogether and move forward with our repairs and expansion as planned,” Reverend Thomas Davis writes.

They encourage all patients who used the clinic to seek treatment at MedNorth Health Center instead.

The court date for the eviction notice is Sept. 4.
