SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – Brunswick County Public Utilities had a discharge of approximately 27,000 to 30,000 gallons of untreated wastewater released to a tributary of the Calabash River.

The discharge began on Aug. 9 at 2:15 a.m. and was contained at 4:30 a.m. at the Sea Trail Wastewater Treatment Facility in Sunset Beach.

The release was attributed to exponential rains and corresponding influent flows from Tropical Storm Debby and the failure of an influent pump.

The failed pump was replaced and the treatment facility was fully operational by noon on Friday.

Sampling and monitoring of the affected downstream site is ongoing.
