WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A walk to support those with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, took place at Wilmington’s Long Leaf Park Saturday morning, Oct. 19.

Several teams from around the Cape Fear area worked to raise money on behalf of family and friends with ALS. ALS United North Carolina hosted the event with all of the raised funds pledged to stay in state.

Family and friends said it’s events like these that show there’s many people out there who understand what it’s like to be impacted by the disease.

“For those of you who are going through this journey, please know you are not alone,” Janna Maynard of Wojtech Warriors said. “This disease can be very isolating. We are a community.”

Together, teams and organizations were able to raise $65,300 that will go directly to support groups, advocacy efforts and equipment programs that provide power chairs and other medical equipment for free to those with ALS. Fundraising will continue through the end of the year.

WECT’S own Gabe Ross was the emcee for the event.
