WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The 22nd Willie Stargell Celebrity Invitational is set for Friday through Sunday, Nov. 1-3, to raise money for those in the local area living with kidney disease.

Close to 50 celebrities are slated to attend this year’s event, including actor Anthony Anderson (black-ish, To Tell the Truth, Transformers), retired Dallas Cowboy Ed “Too Tall” Jones, Sister Sledge’s Kathy Sledge and Connor Barth, former NFL placekicker.

“Willie Stargell played major league baseball for 21 years with the Pittsburgh Pirates,” the release from the Willie Stargell foundation states. “The left-handed slugger was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame his first year of eligibility. Stargell died from kidney disease in 2001. A year later, his widow, Margaret Weller-Stargell created the Willie Stargell Foundation.

“Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, The Willie Stargell Foundation has provided financial assistance to local patients for over two decades. In addition, the foundation has provided funding to healthcare facilities and universities including the Willie Stargell Dialysis Unit at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Grants have also been awarded to Duke Health’s Kidney Transplant program, UNC Chapel Hill’s Kidney Transplant program, and to the nursing schools at UNCW and CFCC.”

This year’s event is sold out, but those who would like to donate can do so still through the foundation’s website.
