COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – A 79-year-old man from Tabor City was killed in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday, Aug. 28, just east of the town, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

At around 2 p.m., a Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 61-year-old John Weidman Jr., of Conway, S.C., was traveling east on Reynolds Road when Weidman failed to yield at the intersection with Peacock Road, according to the NCSHP.

Weidman struck a northbound 2015 Dodge RAM 2500 on the driver’s side of the truck, causing it to cross the center line and hit a 1936 Dodge truck, driven by 79-year-old George Hubert Soles Jr.

Soles was pronounced dead by authorities on scene. The driver and three minor passengers in the 2015 truck were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Weidman, who was also injured in the crash, has been charged with:

  • Misdemeanor death by motor vehicle
  • Failure to yield right of way

Neither speed nor impairment were factors in this crash.
