5,000 gallons of sewage discharged in Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. (WECT) – 5,000 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged from the town of Elizabethtown’s lift station near 107 S. Lower Street on Thursday, Aug. 8. for around 3 and a quarter hours.

“The untreated wastewater entered the tributary of Brown’s Creek in the Cape Fear River Basin. This incident was caused by increased Stormwater Inflow & Infiltration to the sanitary sewer system during Tropical Storm Debby,” the town wrote in a press release.

The overflow stopped at 3:15 a.m. and the Department of Water Resources was notified of the event on Aug. 9.
