WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Students at 30 schools in the New Hanover County Schools district are eligible to get free breakfast and lunch this school year through the Community Eligibility Provision through the USDA.

“The CEP identifies high-poverty schools and reimburses districts for providing free nutritious meals to students at no cost. Families do not need to complete a meal benefits application for students attending a CEP school, eliminating a potential hurdle to receiving free or reduced cost breakfast and lunch at school,” a NHCS announcement states.

The schools that qualified are located throughout the county and include over 11,600 students, about 45 percent of the students enrolled with the district.

“When students have adequate nutrition they are ready to learn,” said NHCS Director of Child Nutrition Amy Stanley. “We know that for some of our students, the meals they receive at school are the most important and nutrient-dense meals of the day. We’re so grateful we can support their learning and development with the meals we serve.”
