WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The annual Cape Fear Purple Heart Dinner took place Friday evening at the UNCW Burney Center.
The event showed honor and recognition to veterans wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. Military. Their families also received thanks from leaders and the community.
WECT’s Frances Weller was this year’s host.
New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon says the evening is a chance to reflect and give thanks to those who served.
“I think sometimes we take for granted our basic freedom. By honoring the Purple Heart recipients it’s a way for us to remember how grateful we need to be. A lot of recipients are older and unfortunately every year there are some that don’t make it for the next year” McMahon said.
