WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – 20 heat-related illness (HRI) emergency department visits were reported between June 30 and July 6 in southeastern NC, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services’ NC Detect data.
The rate was highest in Pender Co. at 6.5 per 100,000 people, compared to the average for all of southeastern NC, which was 2.5 per 100,000.
During the period, there were 6 days where the minimum temperature did not drop below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
For the whole state, there were 433 HRI ED visits for this period, with men aged 20-24 having the highest rate at 7.3 per 100,000 people.
